Dec. 13th is Saint Lucia Day in Sweden. This is my favorite Lucia song. Sa mork ar Natten.
So dark is the night of mid winter season
But see, Lucia is coming.
She comes, the good one, with the light to us here.
She comes with a message of Christmas Peace.
She comes with candles in her crown.
So dark are the nights of the mid winter season
We greet you, fair Lucia.
Welcome, you are good, bringing the light here.
Welcome with greetings for Christmas.
Welcome with your candles in your crown.
Living here in Colorado I have almost forgotten how dark Sweden is during the winter. But I was reminded the other day when someone posted the sunrise and sunset times for Kiruna.
Two days ago, Dec 9th. Sunrise at 11:03 am Sunset at 11:59 am. Yes, less than an hour. And that is not even the longest night. That is not until Dec 22nd.
Christmas for me has allways been all the candles. I love candles in the winter. And considering how dark it is in the country I grew up in, it is not so strange. We celebrate Lucia because she brings the light back to us. I wish the tradition was honored here in the USA also. It is so beautiful!!
